Every year many students decide to study abroad, and that is not a trend, it’s a reality! Annually the number of international students studying in the U.S. only increases, “In 2015/16 there was an increase of 7% over the prior year in the number of international students in the U.S.” reported in Open Doors data on International Students: Enrollment Trends.

Open Doors also Reported on  International Students in the U.S., “1,043,839 international students studied at U.S. colleges and universities in 2015/16.” If you think that is a big number, think again! That doesn’t even include the number of international students in the U.S. that studied at high schools.

If you are wondering if studying abroad is worth it, by the end of this post you should stop asking yourself – Why should I study abroad? And start asking – When will I study abroad?

Here are the top 5 reasons why you should consider studying abroad:

1.     You will improve your language skills…

Studying abroad will help you improve your language skills whether you travel abroad to study a second language, or to attend high school or college. The process of learning a new language when you study in your home country is completely different than when you are living in a country where their native language is the one you are trying to learn or improve. There is a lot of room to develop your language skills due to listening and communicating in the language daily.

2.     You will learn about a new culture…

Studying abroad allows you to learn and to truly understand a new culture by experiencing it first-hand and living it. You will become aware of the country’s food, customs, and traditions.

3.     You will make long-lasting friendships…

When you study abroad you will be meeting new people and making new friends whether it is in the classroom or at school events. You and your new friends will be bond over the experience that you both are sharing. Don’t underestimate the friendship you will be making while abroad, some of the new friends will last a lifetime.

4.     You will increase your job opportunities…

Whether you want to have an opportunity to work abroad or to have more work opportunities back home, studying abroad will increase your chances.

Attending college in the country you want to work will expand your chances to find a job or internship in that host country. Back home, your job opportunities will increase as well, since you will be able to stand out from the crowd by having not only an international diploma or certificate, but also different skills and perspectives compared to your competitors.

5.     You will develop personal growth…

Living in another country is challenging. You are out of your comfort zone, and you might not be fluent in the host country’s language making the process of adaptation harder. However, after studying abroad you will go home with more than a diploma or certificate, as you face the obstacles you will gain independence, will do things you thought you were never capable of doing on your own, and will learn things about yourself that otherwise you wouldn’t.
