Travelling to the United States to study is a big transition. You will be leaving behind not only your family, but your friends as well. Here you will meet new people at school and make new friends, but you should not limit yourself to only making friends with the people in your classroom or school, you should know that there are other ways to meet new people in the U.S.

If you would like to make friends outside of your classroom or group of people, here are 5 ways to meet new people in the United States:

1.      Join a local group that share the same interest as you...

This is number one because it is easiest way to meet new people and make new friends in a different country. You may not speak their language fluently, but you and the others in the host country can share similar passions and interests.

Think about something you like, such as: cooking, running, hiking, playing soccer, reading, etc. Once you find what you like to do on your spare time, you can look for groups that exist near you and join them. For instance, if you enjoy reading, join a book club. That way you will be able to not only meet new people outside your school, but also people who have the same interest as you.

2.      Join the gym…

If you join a gym and make the commitment to go on specific days, you will most likely see the same faces. Going to the gym is a great way to bond with others and to keep you motivated to continue to exercise.

3.      Visit the church…

Another way to meet new people in the U.S. is by visiting a church. People who frequent the church can meet new people by participating in community groups. There are social groups where visitors meet others for coffee, bowling, a movie, etc. There are also groups who meet to study and to talk about the bible.

4.      Attend a Meetup event…

Meetup (for those who don’t know) is a website and an application that people use to create groups and events. On Meetup, you can find a group and an event for almost anything, and if you don’t find what you are looking for, you can create one. You can participate in an event to meet people just like you! Are you an international student? You can participate in an event dedicated for international students. Are you in the U.S. participating in an internship? You can meet others in your field of work.

5.      Join Facebook groups…

Join Facebook groups of the city you are going to be living in, or search for groups with people from your country that already live in the U.S. By finding these types of groups, you can learn about where the best places to visit are and meet people that live close to you. The advantage of joining Facebook groups is that you can start chatting with people online before you meet them in person, making the communication in person a lot easier.
